Ben and Jerry's Ice Cream Factory

Ben and Jerry’s Ice Cream

The Ben & Jerry’s Factory in Waterbury, Vermont, is a must-visit for fans of the iconic ice cream brand. Founded in 1978 by childhood friends Ben Cohen and Jerry Greenfield, the company began as a small, local scoop shop in Burlington, Vermont. Over the years, Ben & Jerry’s grew into a globally recognized brand, known for its quirky flavors, commitment to social and environmental causes, and fun, irreverent marketing.

The Factory Experience

The Waterbury factory, which opened in 1985, offers guided tours that give visitors a behind-the-scenes look at how Ben & Jerry’s ice cream is made. The tour begins with a short film about the history of the company, including how Ben and Jerry, with no formal training in business or ice cream making, turned a $12,000 investment into a beloved international brand. Visitors then move to the production floor, where they can watch ice cream being mixed, churned, and packaged, depending on the factory’s schedule.

A highlight of the tour is the Flavor Room, where guests can sample new or classic flavors, often including limited-edition varieties that aren’t available in stores. Outside, the Flavor Graveyard is a whimsical memorial to flavors that have been discontinued over the years, complete with headstones and humorous epitaphs for flavors like “Wavy Gravy” and “Peanut Butter and Jelly.”

Commitment to Social Responsibility

From its early days, Ben & Jerry’s has been committed to social justice, environmental sustainability, and ethical business practices. The company uses fair trade-certified ingredients, non-GMO products, and supports initiatives ranging from climate action to LGBTQ+ rights. This focus on social responsibility has been a core part of the brand’s identity.

Surrounding Area

The factory is located in the scenic Green Mountains, making it a great stop for visitors exploring the natural beauty of Vermont. With its fun tours, delicious samples, and beautiful surroundings, the Ben & Jerry’s Factory is a must-see destination for ice cream lovers.
