Mammoth Hot Springs, located in the northern part of Yellowstone National Park, is a unique and otherworldly geothermal feature renowned for its colorful terraces and steamy, calcite-depositing springs. Formed over thousands of years, these terraces are created as hot water from underground dissolves limestone and deposits calcium carbonate as it cools, forming an intricate landscape of white, orange, and brown mineral formations. Mammoth Hot Springs is one of the park’s most visually stunning geothermal features, attracting visitors year-round for its beauty and accessibility.
The Mammoth Hot Springs area is easily explored via a series of boardwalks and pathways that wind through the lower and upper terraces. The lower terraces, such as Minerva Terrace and Liberty Cap, showcase dramatic cascades of travertine, where boiling hot water flows over the edges, creating an ethereal, almost alien landscape. As visitors ascend to the upper terraces, they’ll find features like Cleopatra Terrace and New Blue Spring, each with their own unique shapes and colors, constantly changing due to the shifting geothermal activity.
In addition to the hot springs, Mammoth is home to the park’s headquarters and the historic Mammoth Hot Springs Hotel, which dates back to the early 1900s. Nearby Fort Yellowstone, a former U.S. Army fort, offers a glimpse into the park’s history of preservation, with old barracks and officers’ quarters now used as offices and museums.
The surrounding area is rich in wildlife, with frequent sightings of elk and bison. Gardiner River offers excellent opportunities for fishing and hiking, while the Boiling River, just a short drive away, is a unique spot where visitors can soak in the warm waters that mix with the cold river.
Beyond Mammoth Hot Springs, visitors have easy access to other northern Yellowstone highlights, including Lamar Valley, known as the “Serengeti of North America” for its abundant wildlife, and Tower-Roosevelt, where scenic drives offer views of waterfalls, canyons, and rugged mountain terrain. Mammoth Hot Springs provides a diverse and captivating experience in one of Yellowstone’s most geologically fascinating areas.
